What is Mindfulness Meditation?

Simply put, Mindfulness meditation is attention-training.

It is focusing one’s attention in the present moment, with a sense of curiosity, self-compassion and without judgment. Mindfulness practice (focused attention) is the process of focusing your attention on something (e.g., breath, eating, walking, brushing your teeth, etc.), noticing when your mind wanders and then repetitively bringing your attention back to the breath, for example.

“MINDFULNESS MEANS paying attention IN A PARTICULAR WAY: on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.”

— Jon Kabat-Zinn

What IS the Goal of Mindfulness Meditation?

The goal of mindfulness meditation is increased awareness, awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, body sensations and behavior. While benefits to mindfulness meditation practice have been found, the practice of mindfulness meditation is not focused on outcomes. It is only focused on increased awareness.

    I highly recommend this class!

“I participated in Dr. Walsh-Martin’s 8-Week Mindfulness Course. The reading, audio recordings and classes were insightful and useful towards my goal of becoming more present and mindful.  I learned solid and easy techniques to use when in times of need. I highly recommend this class!” — K. L.

I have taken it two times!

“I have greatly benefitted from Dr. Walsh-Martin’s eight-week Mindfulness course, to the extent that I have taken it two times!  From the course, I have learned to actually think about my patterns of thinking, and I have learned strategies to improve my overall wellbeing.  Both Dr. Walsh’s lectures, and the companion book of meditation practices she suggests, have given me ways to control my anxiety. No longer does my mind run away with anxious thoughts without me being reminded of her instruction!” — L.A.

    I was a stay-at-home mom...now I am also a full-time mental health therapist.

“I have taken both the 8-week mindfulness course and her mindfulness tune up. When I initially took the course, I was a stay-at-home mom trying to find ways to bring more balance into my routine. Now I am also a full-time mental health therapist. I didn’t realize when I took that introductory course on mindfulness so many years ago how relevant and helpful it would be in my daily practice both for myself and for working with my clients.” — R.S.

  • Wheat Field - Mindfulness Meditation - Spokane, WA

This class was the tool I could put in my toolbox.

“Dr. D’s Mindfulness class came to me at a very vulnerable time of my life. My husband was seriously ill and I knew we were facing a time in our lives that I was to become his full-time caregiver. I knew in order to care for him I would need to also take care of myself and this class was the tool I could put in my tool box. It was also comforting for me as I am originally from England that our facilitator guiding us through the meditations was also from England.” — S.C.
